Gengetone Star Shalkido dies after tragic Thika Road accident

Date:

Kenya’s Gengetone scene has lost one of its vibrant voices following the death of Kevin Mburu Kinyanjui, popularly known as Shalkido.

The artist passed away while receiving treatment after a tragic accident that occurred along Thika Road on the morning of Sunday, October 5.

The accident reportedly took place between Githurai and Carwash, just before Roysambu, and left the musician with severe head injuries that ultimately claimed his life despite efforts by medics to save him.

According to reports, Shalkido was found lying by the roadside by boda boda riders who happened to pass by the scene. They immediately alerted emergency responders, who arrived minutes later and administered first aid before rushing him to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital.

He was later admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where doctors confirmed he had sustained serious internal injuries. The responders indicated that the crash happened in the early morning when the road was nearly empty, making it difficult to get eyewitness accounts of exactly what caused the accident.

One of the emergency responders told journalists that they received a distress call around 4:42 am and found Shalkido still alive but in critical condition. He was bleeding heavily and appeared to have suffered trauma to the head.

After he was stabilized and transferred to the hospital, his condition deteriorated, prompting doctors to declare him brain-dead later in the day.

Despite medical attention and prayers from family and friends, the musician succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Comedian Oga Obinna, who had closely followed Shalkido’s condition, confirmed the news of his passing. He shared on social media that he had spoken with the artist’s father and was initially hopeful about his recovery.

However, doctors later explained that Shalkido had internal bleeding in multiple areas of the brain, making surgery impossible. Obinna described the situation as heartbreaking, noting that the swelling in the brain made it inoperable and that there was nothing the medical team could do.

Obinna also expressed his disbelief, recalling that he had been with Shalkido shortly before the accident occurred.

He said it was hard to come to terms with how quickly life can change, emphasizing that the tragedy should serve as a reminder of how fragile life is. He thanked the first responders who acted fast to try and save the artist’s life and urged motorists to be more careful on the roads, especially during the early morning hours when visibility is poor.

Shalkido’s death has left the Kenyan music community in shock. He was widely known as a member of the Sailors Gang, a group that helped popularize the Gengetone wave and brought youthful energy and creativity to the music scene.

Fans and fellow artists have flooded social media with messages of condolence, describing him as a talented and humble musician whose career was just beginning to rise again after years of silence. His passing serves as a painful reminder of how sudden tragedy can strike, robbing Kenya of yet another young creative mind full of potential.
