Nairobi residents are once again being drawn into a heated debate about corruption after Embakasi East MP Babu Owino made strong accusations against Nairobi County Chief Officer for Finance, Asha Abdi.
The legislator claimed that she has been looting public money and diverting it through fraudulent payments that serve her interests and those of a few individuals in power.
He argued that instead of working to improve the lives of Nairobians, Asha Abdi has been busy using her office for personal gain at the expense of the public.
Babu Owino alleged that the payments being processed under her office are not genuine but are fraudulent transactions done on behalf of Governor Johnson Sakaja, whom he mockingly referred to as Wamadimplez.
He said these payments only benefit a small group of people while ordinary residents continue to suffer from poor services and underdevelopment.
According to him, funds that could have been channeled into fixing roads, improving health services, and addressing garbage collection are being wasted through dishonest dealings.
The MP also reminded Kenyans that this is not the first time Asha Abdi has been linked to scandals. He said that during her time in Mombasa County, she was accused of theft and mismanagement of funds. Instead of being punished for her actions, she was simply transferred to Nairobi where she is now facing similar accusations.
He warned that such practices of moving corrupt officers from one county to another without accountability only encourage more looting and weaken trust in county governments.
Babu went on to say that evidence of her corrupt activities has already been handed over to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. He called on the commission to act swiftly by investigating the files and making their findings public so that Kenyans can know the truth.
He noted that a lot of money is being lost, money that should be used to develop the county and improve the quality of life for residents.
The Embakasi East MP maintained that he will not stay silent while taxpayers’ money continues to be stolen. He said that as a leader, he has a responsibility to protect the interests of ordinary citizens and expose corruption wherever it occurs.
He also demanded that Governor Sakaja explain why Asha Abdi remains in office despite facing serious accusations.
Babu Owino concluded by warning that Nairobi cannot afford to sink deeper into problems caused by greedy officers. He argued that the city is already dealing with serious challenges, and continued corruption will only make things worse for wananchi. He promised to push for accountability until action is taken against those responsible for the misuse of public funds.
