Atwoli’s enduring grip on labour and the opulent lifestyle that reflects his long reign

Date:

Francis Atwoli, the long-serving Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) in Kenya.

Atwoli is widely recognized for advocating fair wages, better working conditions, equity, and social justice for Kenyan workers over decades.

He has been described as a “formidable champion” who fought tirelessly for labor fairness.

His re-elections often unopposed, including recent ones in 2025–2026 for KPAWU and support for a potential 6th term at COTU, highlight his enduring dominance.

By some accounts, this cements him as a historic figure in Kenya’s labor history, with influence in shaping policies and mainstreaming labor rights, contributions to the 2010 Constitution.

He is known for his outspoken nature and affluent lifestyle. His primary residence is a luxurious, expansive mansion located in the Ildamat area region of Kajiado County, along the Nairobi-Namanga highway, roughly 60 km from Nairobi.

This property is frequently described in Kenyan media as a majestic, palatial, or mega-mansion often dubbed opulent and fit for a king due to its scale and features.

It sits on a large ranch-like plot reports mention around 50 acres with expansive manicured lawns and gardens capable of hosting hundreds of guests or large events.

It’s a venue for high-profile political meetings, family gatherings, and celebrations including events with live bands.

He lives there with his wife Mary Kilobi, and it’s one of his several homes alongside properties in Kilifi, Kakamega/Khwisero, Nakuru, and Nairobi.

While exact interior photos aren’t always publicly detailed due to privacy and security, media outlets like Tuko.co.ke, Kenyans.co.ke, and People Daily have covered it with descriptions and occasional images from events.

It’s portrayed as a majestic, white-toned two-story structure in some footage, surrounded by lush grounds.

His home is tastefully designed for the very rich. Atwoli’s parking lot can accommodate upto 100 cars. It has a helipad and a restaurant that can seat 300 guests at a go.

Then there is a swimming pool to cool off the secretary general after a long day’s work.

Here are some of the photos Atwoli’s home that speaks grandeur and class.
