It has emerged that a fresh political battle is brewing in Ukambani as allies of President William Ruto launch efforts to challenge Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s dominance in the region ahead of the 2027 elections.
Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua is spearheading the campaign, with a key meeting scheduled for January 10 at Maanzoni Lodge, Machakos.
Mutua’s efforts appear to signal Kenya Kwanza’s intent to wrestle the vote-rich Ukambani region from Kalonzo’s firm hold.
“I warmly invite leaders from the lower Eastern and Ukambani regions, representing all sectors, to a crucial meeting aimed at shaping the development and future of our people,” Mutua stated in a public invite shared on his social media.
Kalonzo, who has taken over the reins of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, has long been the undisputed leader of Ukambani. With approximately two million votes from the region, he has consistently been a key political figure in every election cycle.
His influence has grown further with his collaboration with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, sparking speculation of a potential alliance to rival President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in 2027.
The Maanzoni meeting will target a wide range of stakeholders, including political leaders, youth, women, professionals, religious leaders, and government officials.
This is part of a broader effort by Mutua and other Kenya Kwanza leaders to chip away at Kalonzo’s support base.
Mutua previously sought to sway the region during a March 2023 meeting, where he highlighted key appointments made by President Ruto.
At the time, he urged Kamba leaders and professionals to rally behind the administration, citing goodwill shown to the community despite their minimal support in the 2022 election.
“As a community, we gave Ruto minimal votes in the last election, but he has demonstrated goodwill by offering key Cabinet slots to Kambas,” Mutua said.
Meanwhile, Kalonzo has been consolidating his influence, both within and beyond Ukambani.
He has recently courted the Gikuyu, Embu, and Meru Association (GEMA) communities, which have historically voted as a bloc.
This move could significantly bolster his presidential bid in 2027.
