Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has sparked public debate after raising serious concerns over what he describes as an attempt to seize 600 acres of prime land in Lamu.
In a strongly worded statement on social media, the senior counsel claimed the land, valued in billions, is being targeted at a time when Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote is developing a refinery in the area.
Ahmednasir urged the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the matter immediately, calling it an attempted daylight robbery.
He expressed hope that Lamu Governor Timmay would intervene to halt the process and protect public interest.
The lawyer shared images of an official letter from Hon. Mathuhi Marubu Monical, a Member of Parliament, proposing the relocation of Lamu Port and related infrastructure.
According to the correspondence, the proposal involves reallocating land near the port for development purposes. The letter references ongoing government plans under the LAPSSET Corridor project and suggests that certain parcels currently occupied or designated could be freed up.
Critics, including Ahmednasir, view this as a suspicious move that could benefit private interests at the expense of local communities and national development goals.
The Lamu region has long been central to Kenya’s ambitious infrastructure projects aimed at boosting trade and economic growth. However, such initiatives have also faced accusations of irregular land dealings and lack of transparency.
Supporters of the proposal argue it is necessary for modernization and to accommodate expanding industrial activities, including the Dangote refinery which promises significant investment and job creation.
As of now, neither the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission nor county officials have issued formal responses to the claims.
