Activist’s body found at Thika mortuary after missing for 2 Months

Date:

The body of a 24-year-old activist who went missing in November 2024 was discovered at Thika Level Five Hospital’s mortuary.

This occurred more than a month after he went missing in mysterious circumstances.

Police and morgue officials stated the death was the consequence of a hit-and-run.

Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti was last seen in Nairobi’s city center before disappearing, prompting a search by his family.

His friends turned to social media outlets for help in finding him.

On November 15, 2024, the family filed a missing person complaint at Kamukunji Police Station under OB number 80A/13/11/24, they stated.

Their hunt ended in pain after discovering his body at a mortuary on Thika on January 2, 2025.Mwiti worked as a delivery worker about 45 km from where he was last seen.

The circumstances surrounding Mwiti’s death are unclear.

His mother, Sadhiya Iman, said they had sought Mwiti practically everywhere before making the difficult decision to tour morgues in Nairobi and its surroundings, which led them to Thika Level Five Mortuary.

“We were informed that his case was a hit-and-run incident. We know nothing else about his death,” she said.

“We want to know the circumstances surrounding my son’s death.” She also stated that, before his death, Mwiti had lost his ID card and had had difficulty obtaining a replacement.

This made his life difficult because he was often asked to identify himself anytime he wanted government assistance or was stopped by police.

His friends claimed they didn’t think it was a hit-and-run.

Police have yet to issue a statement on Mwiti’s case.Over the last six months, parents have become increasingly concerned about their children disappearing without a trace.

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, at least 82 abductions have occurred since June 2024, when youngsters flocked to the streets to oppose the Finance Bill.

At least 13 occurrences of abduction were registered in the last three months of 2024, with seven occurring in December alone, according to the Commission.

Mulele Ingonga, Director of Public Prosecutions, has directed the police to provide him with an update on the state of investigations into claims of abduction and forced disappearances by January 1, 2025.

He stated that he is concerned about reports of abductions and forced disappearances throughout the country, hence the need for the investigation.

He mentioned the incidents of Steve Mbisi, Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Rony Kiplang’at, and most recently cartoonist Gideon Kibet, also known as Kibet Bull.
