Kenyans demand accountability after Mosiria’s emotional defense of Naipei unravels

Date:

Geoffrey Mosiria, Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement, is now facing serious backlash after rushing to defend Marion Naipei in a viral video scandal that has since taken many turns.

From the start, Mosiria chose to speak loudly and emotionally before all facts were known, placing his office at the center of a controversy that keeps growing. As more information has come out, many Kenyans feel he misled the public and wasted time that should have gone to real county work, and they want him to take responsibility.

The issue began when a video circulated online showing 22-year-old Marion Naipei in a compromising situation with James Opande at a Nairobi club.

Naipei, who was visibly intoxicated in the clip, later reported the matter at Buruburu Police Station. She accused Opande, a US-based Kenyan caregiver who was visiting the country, of recording and sharing the video without her consent.

She said the incident caused her emotional distress and damaged her reputation. The matter drew national attention, prompting Gender Cabinet Secretary Hannah Wendot to call for investigations under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.

Police later arrested two suspects linked to the circulation of the video, although Opande was not among those in custody.

Mosiria quickly inserted himself into the matter through social media. Instead of staying neutral, he openly defended Naipei, referring to her as a “daughter” and urging Kenyans to show compassion.

He shared videos quoting Bible verses and lecturing the public on morality, privacy, and what he called the “bro code.” Many people questioned why a county official responsible for citizen engagement was spending so much time on social media drama while Nairobi continued to struggle with service delivery issues.

Calls grew for Governor Johnson Sakaja to rein him in or remove him from office. The situation changed when more videos linked to Naipei surfaced online. Unlike the first clip from the club, these new videos were said to be self-recorded and showed behavior that contradicted the image of an innocent victim that Mosiria had strongly pushed.

While the content itself shocked many, the bigger issue was what followed. Investigative details circulating online claimed that Naipei may have been the one who first leaked the original video on Telegram after receiving it on WhatsApp.

Reports also suggested that Opande does not even have a Telegram account, raising more questions about who actually shared the footage.

Opande later responded through a video statement, denying that he leaked any videos and saying he would explain his side fully in a longer interview. Naipei, on her part, appeared in interviews asking for forgiveness and explaining that the scandal affected her financially after a man who supported her stopped doing so.

She also asked that Mosiria not be punished, describing him as a father figure.

For many Kenyans, the damage was already done. Mosiria is now seen as a leader who spoke too fast, took sides too early, and turned a sensitive issue into a personal campaign.

The anger online is not just about Naipei anymore. It is about accountability, judgment, and public officials who chase attention instead of facts. Until Mosiria openly admits his mistake and apologizes, this controversy is unlikely to fade.
