Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said that President William Ruto intends to postpone the next general elections in order to extend his term in office beyond the constitutional limits.
Speaking at the Mwiki PCEA church in Kasarani, the former DP said that the elections would be postponed due to the recent series of attacks against him. Responding to an earlier incident in which goons attacked the church event and briefly disrupted the ceremony.
According to Gachagua, the recent wave of attacks were an attempt by the government to stir his supporters into turbulence in order to push the country into disarray.
“Stay calm, do not be provoked, and I know that they are trying to provoke me into conflict. I want our people to stay peaceful so that we do not burn our country,” Gachagua maintained.
“I will not agree to be drawn into responding to disorder because I can see that is what they are trying to do,” he added.
“They are trying to push me to react so that we can burn the country for them to have an opportunity to postpone the elections.” Gachagua’s remarks came only moments after bullets erupted in Nairobi’s Kasarani neighborhood after security officers linked with him fired into the air to disperse hundreds of young people who had invaded the PCEA Kasarani East church.
According to reports, security officers belonging to the former DP intervened when the youth stormed the chapel, purportedly demanding cash.
The youngsters gained admission inside the church and smashed the chairs used by the congregation during the service, injuring numerous persons.
The thugs were mostly outfitted in military fatigues and fighting gear, which raised concerns about their intentions.
In a stinging attack on his former boss, Gachagua blamed the pandemonium at Mwiki PCEA Church on President Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
While calling the attack ‘insensitive and unpleasant,’ Gachagua criticized the president for reportedly funding goons to invade a church, claiming that attacks on him have escalated.
“My President. What happened to you? In a church? You have reached a different level,” the former DP lamented.
“You sent me goons in Limuru last week, you sent goons to Nyeri, and now you’ve sent them to church. You have become bold.”
