Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died at the age of 73.
Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, announced the news on Monday morning, September 7, 2026.
According to official reports, Hafidh died at around 8am while receiving treatment for a heart condition at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
Burial arrangements are underway in his hometown of Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
Hafidh, a former agricultural officer and intellectual, largely stayed out of the political spotlight and maintained a private life while supporting his wife throughout her political career.
His death has plunged Tanzania into mourning, with citizens and leaders expressing their condolences and solidarity with the First Family.
Messages of condolence have also started pouring in from across the region and beyond. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his sadness over the death, highlighting the close ties between Kenya and Tanzania.
“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Her Excellency Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania,” President Ruto stated.
Ruto extended his condolences to President Samia and her family, saying the loss would be deeply felt across Tanzania.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Kenya, the First Lady, my family and on my own behalf, I convey our heartfelt condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania. President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” Ruto added.
Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s solidarity with Tanzania as the country mourns Hafidh.
“Kenya stands with our Tanzanian brothers and sisters in this moment of grief. May Almighty God comfort President Samia and her family, give them strength through this difficult time, and grant Hafidh Ameir Hassan eternal rest.”
