Boni Khalwale leads Kakamega Governor race with 37.8 percent as Mwelekeo Insights reveals new poll results

Date:

The political landscape in Kakamega County is beginning to take shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, with a new digital survey from Mwelekeo Insights showing Senator Boni Khalwale holding a clear lead in the race for governor.

The poll places Khalwale ahead of several well-known political figures, although the results also show that the contest remains open and could change as the election draws closer.

According to the survey, Boni Khalwale leads the Kakamega gubernatorial race with 37.8 percent. His strong position gives him a notable advantage over the other candidates and highlights the level of support he currently enjoys across the county.

Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala comes second with 20.8 percent. Although he is behind Khalwale, his performance places him firmly among the leading contenders.

His political experience and previous role in county politics could help him remain competitive as the campaigns gather pace.

Deputy Governor Ayub Savula follows in third place with 12.5 percent. His position shows that he remains an important figure in the contest, although the figures indicate that he would need to expand his support to challenge the two candidates ahead of him.

Governor Fernandes Barasa is fourth with 10.4 percent. His position is notable given that he is the sitting governor and is expected to defend his record as he seeks to remain in office.

The survey suggests he has room to strengthen his support as the election approaches.

Christopher Aseka records 8.9 percent, while Samuel Omukoko has 5.3 percent.

Elsie Muhanda follows with 4.2 percent. While these candidates are currently behind the leading contenders, the political landscape can change significantly before voters make their final decisions.

The results offer an early picture of how the major candidates are performing.

Khalwale’s lead gives him an advantage at this stage, but the gap also gives his rivals an opportunity to rethink their strategies and work on increasing their support.

For the candidates, the figures provide an indication of the areas where they may need to put more effort.

Building stronger connections with voters, explaining their plans and addressing local concerns will be important as the race develops.

Mwelekeo Insights

The survey was conducted by Mwelekeo Insights, which continues to provide research and public opinion data on political issues across Kenya.

Its findings offer a view of voter sentiment and give the public an indication of how the Kakamega gubernatorial race is currently shaping up.

The latest figures should not be treated as a final prediction of the 2027 election. Political alliances, party nominations, campaigns and changing voter preferences could still have a major influence on the race.

Future surveys are likely to show whether Khalwale can maintain his lead or whether his competitors can narrow the gap.
