Calls Grow for Action Against Kaluma Over Homa Bay Political Remarks

Date:

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma is facing growing scrutiny over remarks in which he appeared to warn supporters against using the phrase “one term” in Homa Bay County.

The remarks have sparked criticism, with questions being raised over their impact at a time when political tensions are increasing ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a video circulating online, Kaluma is heard addressing a small gathering in Luo and warning people who support the “one-term” campaign.

He also appeared to target hotels and houses hosting people associated with the group, saying they could face action.

Kaluma said hotels in Homa Bay should provide information about their guests and warned that some premises could also be affected if they hosted people from the opposing political camp.

He further said groups of young people would move around the area to inspect hotels and other places where political supporters had booked accommodation.

The MP also appeared to call for people who had previously worked with the opposing side to distance themselves or leave the area. His remarks have raised concerns over whether political disagreements are being allowed to turn into threats against individuals and businesses.

The comments came shortly before a political gathering by the Linda Mwananchi faction in Homa Bay on Sunday, August 16, which was disrupted by groups of youths. The incident created tension in the area, with reports indicating that some of the youths were carrying weapons.

The tension had already been felt on Saturday evening when a group of youths reportedly raided Homa Bay Tourist Hotel.

According to a police report filed by hotel manager Robert Odongo, the group entered the premises at about 8pm and damaged windows, furniture and other equipment.

Some items were also reportedly taken.Police later confirmed the incident and said the suspected vandals had already left the hotel on motorcycles by the time officers arrived.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission has condemned the violence surrounding the Linda Mwananchi activities and said it had started the process of summoning political actors believed to be linked to the unrest.

However, the commission has not publicly announced action against Kaluma over his remarks.

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has since called for Kaluma to be arrested and prosecuted.

Speaking during a church service in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, she accused security and cohesion agencies of applying the law selectively when dealing with inflammatory political statements.

Maina argued that leaders making divisive remarks should face the law regardless of their political position. She questioned why Kaluma remained free despite what she described as serious comments.

The controversy comes as political activities intensify across the country.

The Linda Mwananchi movement, associated with leaders including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Siaya Governor James Orengo, has been holding public engagements while calling for political change in 2027.

The latest developments in Homa Bay have renewed calls for political leaders and their supporters to avoid statements and actions that could deepen tensions as the country moves closer to the next General Election.
