Detectives in Kisumu County have launched a manhunt for a suspect linked to the death of a night guard following a violent altercation in the Dunga area, in a case that police say may have been triggered by a suspected love triangle.
The incident, which has drawn concern among residents, happened on April 21 at around 3:00 pm at a residential site near Kiboko Bay.
Police identified the deceased as Thomas Egilaiza, a 35-year-old man who worked as a night guard. His body was found lying on his back at the base of a water tank within the compound. Witnesses told investigators that Egilaiza had been involved in a confrontation with a fellow security guard, reportedly after a disagreement involving a woman who had visited them at the site.
According to preliminary findings, the altercation began near the lakeshore before escalating into a physical fight. During the confrontation, Egilaiza sustained serious injuries, including deep cuts to his forehead and back.
Investigators believe the injuries were inflicted using a stone that was later recovered at the scene, which appears to match accounts given by witnesses.
Despite the severity of his injuries, it is reported that Egilaiza managed to walk away from the initial scene of the fight and made his way toward a second location near the suspect’s residence. He later collapsed there as colleagues attempted to administer first aid.
Efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
The suspect, who is also said to be employed as a security guard, fled immediately after the incident and has not been arrested. Police have since intensified efforts to trace him, appealing to anyone with information that could lead to his arrest to come forward. By Thursday, authorities confirmed that he was still at large.
The body of the deceased was moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem examination is expected to be conducted to establish further details surrounding the cause of death. Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
In a separate case in Kericho County, police are also investigating the death of a middle-aged man whose body was found under unclear circumstances in the Sondu area of Sigowet Sub-County. The discovery was reported by a local resident who said she came across the body while heading to the highway to receive a parcel.
Officers who visited the scene confirmed that the man had no visible physical injuries at the time the body was found. The area was processed by investigators, and the body was later moved to the Sigowet Sub-County Mortuary for preservation.
Authorities have not yet identified the man and are urging members of the public with missing relatives or any useful information to assist in the investigation. A postmortem examination is expected to help determine the cause of death as inquiries continue.
