Emotional moments were witnessed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday, March 19, when a Kenyan man, Kelvin Koriko, finally returned home after spending months in a region affected by the Russia Ukraine War.
Koriko was warmly received by his family and friends in a touching reunion that brought together joy, relief, and gratitude.
Songs, dance, and ululations filled the arrivals area as his loved ones gathered to welcome him back. Many could not hide their emotions as they embraced him, marking the end of a long and uncertain period during which they had little or no communication with him.
It was shared that Koriko had travelled abroad in search of better job opportunities, hoping to improve his life and support his family. However, his journey took an unexpected turn when he found himself in an area heavily affected by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
What was meant to be a step toward a brighter future quickly became a struggle for safety and survival.
Speaking briefly after his arrival, Koriko explained that the conditions he faced were far more difficult than he had imagined before leaving Kenya.
He described moments of fear and uncertainty, saying that everyday life in a conflict zone was challenging and unpredictable. His experience reflected the harsh realities faced by many people living or working in areas affected by war.
Family members revealed that there were times when they feared the worst. With limited communication and little information about his situation, they lived in constant worry. His safe return has therefore brought not only happiness but also a sense of closure after months of anxiety.
The ongoing conflict, which began in 2022, has impacted many people beyond the borders of the two countries involved.
Foreign nationals who travel to such regions for work or other reasons often find themselves exposed to unexpected risks. In recent years, concerns have been raised about individuals being misled by unverified job offers that do not clearly explain the dangers involved.
Authorities have used Koriko’s experience to remind Kenyans to be careful when seeking employment opportunities abroad.
They have advised job seekers to verify recruitment agencies and fully understand the nature of the work they are accepting before travelling.
Officials also warned that some offers may hide difficult or unsafe conditions, including the possibility of ending up in conflict zones.
Young people have especially been encouraged to carry out proper checks and seek guidance from relevant government offices before making decisions to travel.
