Iran raises doubts about 2026 FIFA World Cup participation despite qualifying

Date:

A new development has raised questions about the lineup for the next global football tournament after Iran signaled that its national team will not take part in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The competition will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico between 11 June and 19 July 2026.

Iran’s Minister of Sport and Youth, Ahmad Donyamali, explained that the decision is linked to the current political tensions between Tehran and Washington.

According to the minister, the national football team cannot travel to or compete in the United States under the existing diplomatic and security conditions.

He said the government believes it would not be possible for Iranian players and officials to participate in a tournament that will partly take place on American soil.

The announcement comes despite the fact that Iran had already secured qualification for the tournament through the Asian qualifying campaign organized by the Asian Football Confederation.

Their successful qualification had initially confirmed the team’s place in the expanded competition, which will feature 48 national teams for the first time in World Cup history.

Iran has been one of Asia’s regular representatives at the global tournament over the years.

The national team, widely known as Team Melli, has appeared in several editions of the competition. Historically, the country has taken part in six World Cups, including the tournaments held in 1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018, and most recently in 2022.

Donyamali’s remarks suggest that the government’s stance may stop the team from traveling to the United States for any matches linked to the tournament.

Since the competition will be shared by three host nations, it remains unclear whether scheduling matches outside the United States could offer a possible solution.

However, the minister indicated that the current political climate makes participation difficult.

The situation now leaves uncertainty around Iran’s place in the tournament despite the team having already qualified through the regional competition.

Football observers are watching closely to see how the global governing body will respond.

The responsibility for addressing such matters rests with FIFA, which organizes and manages the World Cup.

FIFA has not yet issued a final decision following the announcement from Iranian officials.

Under its regulations, the organization has the authority to determine what should happen if a qualified team withdraws from the competition. If Iran officially pulls out, FIFA could decide whether another national team should replace them.

The football world is waiting for further clarification on how the situation will be resolved ahead of the 2026 tournament.
