Political Ringside episode puts Nairobi leaders under scrutiny over flood response

Date:

Political Ringside has built a strong reputation as one of the leading Kenyan platforms for political discussion, using its professional and crafted episodes to examine major issues affecting the country.

The show focuses on current political developments and often invites voices from different sectors to discuss leadership, governance, and public concerns.

In one of its recent discussions, attention turned to the performance of leaders in Nairobi following the devastating floods that recently affected several parts of the city.

The floods left a painful mark on the capital after more than 30 people lost their lives and many families were displaced.

Roads were submerged, homes were damaged, and businesses were disrupted as heavy rains overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems. In many areas, residents struggled to move around or access essential services as water levels continued to rise.

The situation once again raised questions about how prepared the city is to deal with disasters linked to extreme weather.

During the conversation, Boda Boda Association Chairman Ken Onyango gave a strong opinion about how Nairobi leaders handled the crisis.

He criticized Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, saying their response did not meet the expectations of residents during such a difficult time.

According to Onyango, the floods exposed serious weaknesses in how the city responds to emergencies and supports affected communities.

He explained that boda boda riders were among the groups most affected by the floods. Many riders depend on daily income from transporting passengers across the city, but flooded roads made movement dangerous and in some places impossible.

Onyango said that despite these challenges, many riders felt they had been left to face the situation on their own without clear assistance or guidance from county leadership.

The discussion also pointed to long-standing problems that continue to affect Nairobi, including poor drainage systems, blocked waterways, and limited preparation for heavy rainfall.

Onyango argued that these problems are not new and should have been addressed earlier through better planning and infrastructure development.

Because of this, he rated Governor Sakaja’s performance very low, giving him a score of about two out of ten based on how the situation was handled.

Beyond individual criticism, the episode focused on the broader issue of accountability at the county level.

The panel questioned whether elected leaders are doing enough to respond quickly during emergencies and whether promises made during campaigns are being translated into real solutions for residents.

The human cost of the floods remained central to the conversation. With lives lost and property destroyed, the tragedy served as a reminder of how vulnerable many communities are when disasters strike.

Participants in the discussion stressed the need for stronger planning, improved drainage infrastructure, and faster emergency responses to reduce the impact of future floods.

Featuring voices like Onyango’s, Political Ringside connects political debate with the everyday struggles faced by ordinary Kenyans.

The discussion highlights how leadership is often judged during moments of crisis, when residents expect clear action and practical solutions from those in power.

At the same time, it raises important questions about how Nairobi can better prepare for climate-related challenges as the city continues to grow and face increasing pressure on its infrastructure.
