A newly launched online platform linked to the Linda Mwananchi initiative has been temporarily taken offline after experiencing cyber attacks and concerns over the safety of users’ personal information.
The website had just gone live and quickly attracted strong interest from Kenyans across the country.
Within hours of its launch, thousands of people had reportedly signed up to join the platform, showing early support for the initiative. However, the excitement surrounding the launch was soon overshadowed by technical problems and security concerns that began circulating online.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna confirmed on Saturday, March 14 that the team managing the platform decided to take the website offline for a short period. According to him, the move was necessary to deal with technical issues and strengthen the system after the platform came under several malicious cyber attacks.
Sifuna explained that the website had officially gone live on Friday, March 13 and immediately drew large numbers of users who were eager to register. He thanked Kenyans who had already joined the platform and said their support showed the level of public interest in the initiative.
In his message, the senator noted that the launch attracted both positive reactions and attempts by unknown individuals to interfere with the platform. He said the team had received helpful feedback from supporters about how the website could be improved while at the same time dealing with multiple cyber attacks targeting the system.
Despite the early excitement, controversy soon emerged online after screenshots began circulating on social media. The images allegedly showed personal information belonging to some users who had signed up on the platform.
The details appearing in the screenshots included names, phone numbers, email addresses and other personal data.
The screenshots raised concerns among internet users about whether the platform had enough safeguards to protect the private information of those who had registered.
Many people online questioned the security measures in place and called for stronger protection of user data.
Supporters of the initiative, however, maintained that the temporary shutdown would allow the team to correct the technical problems and improve the platform before it returns online.
The Linda Mwananchi initiative has recently gained attention in political discussions.
Several leaders associated with the project, including Babu Owino and James Orengo, have been vocal in opposing the current broad-based political arrangement.
The group argues that the deal undermines the political legacy of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
They have accused another faction known as Linda Ground, led by Oburu Oginga, of siding with President William Ruto in a way they believe goes against the interests of their party supporters.
