The upcoming visit to Bondo by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a team of opposition figures is shaping up to be one of the most symbolic gestures of unity in recent Kenyan politics.
United Opposition Youth Leader Ken Babu confirmed the development during a morning interview on Monday, October 27, 2025, noting that Gachagua will lead the delegation to pay tribute to the late Raila Amolo Odinga.
He described the visit as a moment of reflection and national respect, rather than a political mission.
Ken Babu emphasized that the visit will bring together leaders from across the political spectrum to honor a man whose influence transcended party lines.
He said the group will travel to Bondo to express condolences to the Odinga and Jaramogi family, acknowledging Raila as a national figure who played an unmatched role in shaping Kenya’s democratic journey.
He made it clear that this act of condolence was not tied to any political agenda but rather a shared appreciation of Raila’s contribution to the country’s history and governance.
His remarks came just days after Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga claimed that Gachagua had not publicly mourned Raila. Responding to those sentiments, Ken Babu extended his sympathy to Raila’s family, including Raila Jr. and Mama Ida Odinga, describing Raila’s passing as a loss that affected the entire nation.
He spoke passionately about Raila’s influence, saying he was a leader without an official position yet held immense authority and respect across the country.
Addressing recent speculation, Ken Babu dismissed reports that Gachagua had been barred from visiting the Odinga family in Bondo. He clarified that Raila Jr. had already addressed the issue, confirming that the family had no objections to anyone wishing to pay their respects.
According to Babu, the Odinga family understood that Raila belonged to the whole nation and that everyone deserved the chance to honor his memory.
The discussion surrounding Gachagua’s relationship with Raila’s legacy began after his absence at the national farewell held at Nyayo Stadium. Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa came to Gachagua’s defense, explaining that his silence and absence were meant as gestures of respect rather than neglect.
Thang’wa stated that the former deputy president did not wish to draw attention away from Raila’s life and achievements, saying that sometimes silence carries a deeper message of reverence.
After the state funeral, several leaders made their way to Bondo to pay their final respects. On October 21, 2025, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Siaya Governor James Orengo visited Raila’s grave at his Kang’o ka Jaramogi home, accompanied by members of the Odinga family. Their visit followed similar tributes from former President Uhuru Kenyatta and other national leaders who continued to honor Raila even after his burial.
Ken Babu said the upcoming visit by Gachagua and other leaders will further demonstrate how Raila Odinga’s influence united people across different political and social backgrounds. He noted that Raila’s passing reminded Kenyans that, beyond politics, there is shared humanity and respect for those who dedicate their lives to public service.
