Mwelekeo Insights releases study on Gen Zs, mixed feelings on political influence and activism

Date:

Mwelekeo Insights recently conducted a poll that revealed diverse perspectives on the role of Gen Z in Kenya’s political and civic landscape. The results shed light on how different groups view the impact and potential of this generation in the socio-economic and political spheres.

The data indicates that Gen Z is perceived as an increasingly influential force, with many respondents acknowledging their political awareness, activism, and ability to adapt to economic challenges. However, there are varied opinions on their work ethic, leadership potential, and how they engage with societal norms.

A significant 77% of the respondents in the poll agree that Gen Zs are politically aware and actively engaged in political discourse, particularly on social media platforms. This engagement is seen as a testament to the generation’s awareness of national and global issues, especially those related to governance and social justice. Only 13% of respondents disagreed, while 10% were unsure about the extent of their political engagement.

This shows that the majority view Gen Z as an informed and vocal group in the political scene. When it comes to activism, 51% of the respondents commended Gen Zs for their structured and bold approach to activism, which includes protests and campaigns tackling governance and social justice. However, 44% felt that their activism lacked the structure needed for long-term impact while the 5% remained neutral.

This reflects a divide in the perception of Gen Z’s methods some view them as effective and well-organized, while others question the sustainability of their actions.

In terms of leadership potential, 57% of respondents believe that Gen Zs have the capability to lead but need mentorship to develop practical governance skills. This highlights a widespread belief in their potential, though there is recognition that guidance is necessary to help them navigate the complexities of leadership.

On the other hand, 35% of people think that Gen Zs are naturally opposed to the establishment and may not be interested in leadership roles, while 8% remained neutral on the matter.

Mwelekeo Insights also delved into the economic contributions of Gen Z. A remarkable 74% of respondents acknowledged the generation’s entrepreneurial spirit, with many finding innovative ways to earn a living through online businesses, freelancing, and content creation. However, 21% of participants perceived Gen Z as lazy and lacking the drive of previous generations, while 5% were unsure.

This shows a strong belief in Gen Z’s ability to adapt and create new economic opportunities, although there is a minority who hold differing views.

Regarding adaptability in the face of economic challenges, 77% of respondents believe that Gen Z is able to navigate issues like high unemployment and inflation. This adaptability is seen as a strength, allowing them to thrive in difficult conditions. Only 23% disagreed with this, viewing Gen Z as unable to adapt to economic pressures.

However, when it comes to organizational norms in the workplace, 48% of respondents expressed concerns about Gen Z’s ability to conform to traditional expectations.

Some view them as uninterested or unable to meet conventional standards, while 39% think they are non-compliant. Only 13% of respondents believe Gen Z is trying to adapt to these norms. This reflects the generation’s more flexible and non-traditional approach to work, which can sometimes clash with established practices.

In terms of social and cultural values, Gen Z is overwhelmingly viewed as progressive, with 84% of respondents supporting their stance on gender equality, sexual rights, mental health awareness, and environmental sustainability. This progressive outlook shows that Gen Z is pushing for a more inclusive and aware society, though 13% oppose these values and 3% are neutral.

The poll also highlighted the generational gaps between Gen Z and older generations. A significant 64% of respondents recognized stark differences in work ethic, lifestyle, and communication styles between Gen Z and older generations, while 32% saw no difference.

These differences can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, but there is a strong belief in the potential for collaboration.

78% of respondents suggested that mentorship programs, intergenerational dialogue, and collaborative projects could bridge these gaps, fostering greater understanding and cooperation between generations, 8% were not sure while 14% rejected.

When comparing rural and urban perspectives, there are notable differences in how Gen Z is viewed. In rural areas, 52% of respondents support Gen Z as agents of positive change, while 34% oppose them.

Urban dwellers, however, are even more supportive, with 68% agreeing that Gen Z has the power to bring about socio-economic and political change, and 18% opposed.

In terms of gender insights, the poll shows a strong consensus among both men and women in supporting Gen Z as agents of change.

79% of men and 81% of women believe in Gen Z’s potential to drive positive change, with only a small percentage opposing or remaining neutral.

Mwelekeo Insights’ poll provides a comprehensive view of how Gen Z is perceived in Kenya today. While there are diverse opinions on their approach to politics, activism, work, and social values, the majority agree that this generation has the potential to shape the future in significant ways.

Whether through their political engagement, entrepreneurial spirit, or progressive values, Gen Z is poised to play a crucial role in Kenya’s development. However, their success will depend on how well they can collaborate with older generations and adapt to the challenges that lie ahead.
