“We must destroy NADCO, save the constitution” Omtatah speaks after surprise MoU

Date:

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah condemned his move, stating that he should focus on enforcing the Constitution.

This happened shortly after President Wiliam Ruto promised to support the full implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report.

The NADCO report emerged as a result of the disputed 2022 elections. Ruto and Raila have agreed to form a committee to ease tensions between the opposition and the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration following the 2022 general elections.

The NADCO committee was co-chaired by Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

In November 2023, the committee issued the infamous NADCO report, which advocated, among other things, the restructuring of the IEBC. It will also aid in the appraisal of the 2022 electoral process and the establishment of the posts of Prime Minister and Leader of the Official Opposition.

Speaking at the People’s Dialogue Festival at Uhuru Park on Friday, March 7, Omtatah warned that implementing the NADCO report will destroy the country’s future.

The Senator believes that instead of endorsing the report, the government should focus on implementing and amending the Constitution.

“We must destroy NADCO and save the Constitution, the way it is, must be implemented one hundred percent. Then, if it doesn’t work, we move on to amend it,” he said.

“You cannot have a big vehicle with a big engine, then you have removed the wheels, and then you say that the car cannot move. Just put back the wheels and see how that thing moves,” he added.

Omtatah reassured that the opposition, led by the people, will continue to oppose Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s efforts to execute the findings.

“I am requesting you as the people, anyone supporting the NADCO report, must be destroyed from public life and go back to their private life,” he said.

“Raila Odinga and William Ruto have declared war on the future of this country; they want to take us to the past, and we say we are not going back to the past; we are going forward, and we are ready to take them on,” he said.

Ruto and Raila signed a political cooperation agreement between the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) that will allow the two parties to collaborate.

The two parties agreed on a 10-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote national unity and address governance challenges.

The agreement contained agreements to fully execute the National Dialogue Committee’s (NADCO) findings, ensure inclusivity in budgetary allocations and public posts, and uphold devolution principles. The MOU also emphasized economic investments for youth, boosting leadership integrity, and reducing extravagant lives among public officials.

Additional clauses of the MoU argue for the protection of citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly, restitution for victims of human rights violations, and a thorough examination of national debt utilization.
