Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stated that he will lead protests if Chief Justice Martha Koome is removed from office or jailed.
In an interview with Kikuyu Radio stations on Sunday, February 9, the former DP stated unequivocally that he will not allow the Chief Justice to be removed from office in the same manner in which he was impeached.
“They want to chase Martha Koome the same way they chased me. We shall not keep quiet again if they remove Martha Koome, we shall go out to the streets and close the roads,” he said.
Gachagua has now stated that Mt Kenya Region leaders will not remain mute if subjected to mistreatment by the current leadership.
Gachagua has stated that the removal of Koome will greatly harm the region’s communities.
“The youths came to me and told me that I made a mistake in telling them to keep quiet after I was impeached,” he said.
“They planned to harm us in Limuru and we kept quiet, the next day our meeting was destroyed, if that happens again we will meet in the streets.”
The former DP also disclosed that teenagers from the region approached him and expressed their displeasure after he informed them not to react after his removal as the deputy president.
Addressing congregations at Meru PCEA Church on January 26, the former DP said that President William Ruto was eager to dissolve the Supreme Court ahead of the 2027 general elections and that a budget had already been set aside for the project.
“There is a bigger scheme to dismantle the Supreme Court ahead of the 2027 elections. A budget has been set aside through the National Intelligence Service,” he said.
Gachagua’s comments in Meru occurred only days after it was revealed that Koome’s security detail had been withdrawn and then returned, a practice that has been all too frequent among prominent judges in recent years.
While pointing to Koome’s grief, the former DP stated it was a deliberate tactic by the State to force Koome to retire.
“All those petitions you see in the Supreme Court are the makings of the government because they would like to put a Supreme Court bench that is amicable to what those in power want,” he said.
