Government shuts down 116 companies amidst surge in unemployment

Date:

While the economy continues to deteriorate, more Kenyans have been laid off after the government announced the closure of 116 businesses.

In a Gazette Notice dated January 3, Registrar of Enterprises Joyce Koech informed Kenyans that enterprises offering various products and services had ceased to operate as businesses.

“Pursuant to Section 897 (4) of the Companies Act, 2015, it is notified for information of the general public that the following companies are dissolved and their names have been struck off the Register of Companies with effect from the date of publication of this notice,” Koech revealed.

The registrar of businesses did not specify why the companies were disbanded.

The complete list of dissolved corporations can be seen on pages 16-19 of the Gazette notice number 94, which was issued on January 3.

In the same notification, Koech alerted 115 more entities that they will be dissolved within the next three months.

“PURSUANT to Section 897(3) of the Companies Act, the Registrar of Companies gives notice that the names of the companies specified hereunder shall be struck off from the Register of Companies at the expiration of three months from the date of publication of this Notice,” the notice read in part.

The Registrar of Companies has encouraged anyone who has an objection to the proposed dissolution to give reasons and evidence as to why they should not be dissolved.

“The registrar invites any person to show cause why the companies should not be struck off from the Register of Companies,” the notice continued.

According to the Companies Act, a company may ask to be struck off the register of companies by its directors or the Registrar of Companies when it ceases to operate and exist.

A company may be dissolved if it violates the law or is in liquidity.

Many past enterprises folded as a result of the government’s harsh regulatory and taxing initiatives.

The dissolution of the 116 will affect many Kenyans, either directly or indirectly, particularly those whose livelihoods are dependent on the enterprises. It comes as the country faces huge unemployment.

On January 1, over 500,000 government support staff working in secondary schools around the country lost their employment as a result of new developments brought about by the transition to Junior Secondary Schools.
