Eight feared dead after matatu and saloon car collide on Mombasa road

Date:

Several people are feared dead after a serious road crash involving a PSV matatu and a saloon car along Mombasa Road near Syokimau on Thursday evening.

The accident happened on the section of the road between Quiver Mombasa Road and Katani. The two vehicles reportedly collided before leaving the road and landing in a ditch.

The force of the impact left both vehicles badly damaged, raising fears that some of those involved may have died at the scene.

The 18-seater matatu suffered heavy damage, particularly around the front and driver’s cabin. Its rear section was also damaged in the crash.

The saloon car was left badly wrecked following the collision.

Initial reports indicated that at least eight people were feared dead, although the exact number of fatalities had not been confirmed by authorities at the time.

The number of people who survived the crash was also not immediately clear.

Emergency response teams moved to the scene to assist those who had been injured and assess the situation. The condition of the survivors, if any, was yet to be established as rescue efforts continued.

The crash caused concern among motorists and residents in the area as emergency personnel worked at the scene. Police officers also arrived to secure the area and begin investigations into what led to the collision.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remained unclear, with an apparent head-on collision being reported.

Police are expected to examine the position of the vehicles, statements from witnesses and other available evidence as part of their investigation.

Road accidents involving public service vehicles continue to raise concerns because of the number of passengers who can be affected in a single crash.

The latest incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by motorists and passengers using busy highways, particularly during the evening when traffic conditions can change quickly.

Authorities have not yet released a full account of the incident or confirmed the identities of those involved.

Further details are expected as police complete their assessment of the crash and establish the confirmed number of casualties.
