President William Ruto has renewed his criticism of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of supporting the Opposition in an effort to weaken his administration.
Speaking to residents in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Thursday, Ruto questioned Uhuru’s record while serving as president, particularly on affordable housing, universal health coverage and education. He claimed that his predecessor was now backing groups and individuals seeking to challenge his government.
Ruto said his administration should instead be judged by the projects it has undertaken and the opportunities created for Kenyans.
He pointed to affordable housing projects, markets and hostels being constructed in different parts of the country, saying the developments were providing jobs, especially for young people.
The President also challenged the Opposition to present clear policies instead of relying on calls for him to leave office after one term. He argued that political leaders should be assessed based on their work and plans for the country.
Addressing young people involved in affordable housing projects, Ruto encouraged them to prepare for more construction opportunities.
He said he wanted the programme to continue for many years if he is re-elected, with the aim of making construction a major source of employment.
Ruto’s remarks come after similar claims by some Kenya Kwanza leaders that Uhuru is supporting the Linda Mwananchi movement and the wider Opposition. Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot made a similar allegation during an empowerment event in Taita Taveta County on July 24.
However, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has rejected the claims. Speaking during Citizen TV’s Explainer on July 28, Sifuna said Uhuru’s involvement was mainly about encouraging young people to participate in leadership.
The allegations have added to the growing political debate as leaders from both sides position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
