Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s residence was hit by a fire on Saturday morning, with Nairobi County emergency teams responding quickly to contain the blaze before it caused more damage.
The fire reportedly started around dawn, with videos shared online showing flames and thick smoke coming from part of the building.
Sparks were also visible around the affected outer section of the residence, raising the possibility of an electrical fault, although the exact cause of the fire had not been confirmed.
Nairobi City County firefighters, led by Customer Service Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria, arrived at the scene and managed to put out the fire.
Their quick response helped prevent the flames from spreading to other sections of the property.
Shortly after the incident, Sonko addressed the public through social media, confirming that he was safe and appreciating the county emergency team for their response.
“The devil is a liar! Just look at how much God loves us. Imagine, He woke us up!” Sonko wrote on his social media page.
He also thanked Mosiria and the Nairobi County team for their efforts in responding to the emergency, praising their intervention during the incident.
Footage shared by Sonko showed several people working to control the flames as the fire lit up parts of the residence in the darkness.
According to the former governor, he and other occupants were awake when the incident happened, allowing them to raise the alarm and seek help from emergency responders.
No injuries were reported immediately, and the extent of the damage remained unclear. Authorities are expected to carry out further assessments to establish the cause of the fire and determine the level of destruction caused.
The incident adds to a series of fire emergencies that Nairobi response teams have handled in recent days as firefighters continue working to protect lives and property across the city.
Earlier, another fire broke out at Ali Glacier, one of the largest hardware stores along 3rd Street in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area.
The incident sent large amounts of smoke into the air as emergency teams rushed to contain the situation and stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.
Witnesses at the Eastleigh scene reported hearing sounds similar to explosions from inside the building, though the source of the sounds had not been confirmed.
Authorities are expected to investigate both incidents and provide more details on what caused the fires.
