Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has made fresh claims against the police service, alleging that two officers attached to Kikuyu Police Station were paid to assassinate him, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka during a political rally held in Kikuyu earlier this year.
Speaking at his Wamunyoro home during a meeting with leaders from Murang’a County, Gachagua said he had received the information from police officers based at Kikuyu Police Station.
He claimed the officers informed him that the alleged assassination plot involved two of their colleagues.Gachagua further accused the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, of failing to take action despite being aware of the allegations.
According to him, attempts to investigate the two officers had not produced any results because they were allegedly being protected.
The former Deputy President also linked the two officers to other serious crimes. He alleged that they were involved in the deaths of Kyalo Mbobu and Dr. Victoria Mutiso, claiming the incidents were connected to land disputes.
“They have told me that there are two police officers who killed Kyalo Mbobu because of land. Recently, they also killed Dr. Victoria Mutiso over the same issue. Those two police officers are from the same tribe as Ruto and Murkomen,” Gachagua claimed.
He went on to allege that the same officers were deployed during the political rally in Kikuyu where he appeared alongside Matiang’i and Kalonzo.
According to Gachagua, the officers had allegedly been paid to eliminate the three opposition leaders during the event.
“The day we were attacked with Kalonzo and Matiang’i, these two police officers from Kikuyu Police Station were the ones paid to kill me, Matiang’i and Kalonzo. In Kikuyu Police Station is where they killed that lawyer and killed this doctor Victoria Mutiso,” he alleged.
Gachagua also accused the National Police Service of becoming ethnically biased. He claimed that several key police positions, especially within Nairobi, were occupied by officers drawn from President William Ruto’s community.
“The police service has been ethnicised. You have seen Nairobi OCS, OC Crime almost all, OCPD all are from Ruto’s tribe and are the ones used and work with goons,” he claimed.
The DCP leader further accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen of using the police service to advance political interests. He alleged that some officers had privately complained of being forced to work alongside criminal gangs.
The allegations come amid rising political tensions between Gachagua and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
At the time of his remarks, neither the National Police Service, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations nor those accused had publicly responded to the claims.
