Questions surrounding the death of 14-year-old Grade 9 student Randy Mathenge remain as investigations continue, even after a joint postmortem established the cause of his fatal injuries.
The postmortem examination, carried out at Kenyatta National Hospital on June 29, concluded that Randy died from severe blunt force trauma consistent with a fall from a height.
The exercise was led by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor and involved a team of government and Kenyatta National Hospital pathologists, homicide detectives, and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to the findings, the teenager suffered serious injuries to the head, chest, and back. The pathologists determined that the injuries were caused by blunt force trauma and were consistent with someone falling from a height.
Although the postmortem established the medical cause of death, investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened before the incident.
Detectives are expected to revisit the scene at Lakewood Private School in Utawala as part of efforts to reconstruct the events that led to Randy’s death.
The investigation will also include a detailed examination of the student’s personal belongings together with samples collected during the postmortem.
Officials hope the evidence will help piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident and provide a clearer picture of what took place.
Randy died on June 19, shortly after arriving at the school. According to the school’s account, the student jumped from the third floor of one of the buildings. However, his family has questioned that version of events and has called for a thorough investigation to establish the truth.
The differing accounts have made the case the subject of close public attention, with many awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
Detectives have not yet reached a final conclusion on how the incident occurred and are continuing to gather evidence before making any determinations.
Authorities have maintained that investigations are still active and that all available evidence will be examined before a final report is prepared.
The findings from the postmortem form an important part of the inquiry, but investigators say additional forensic analysis and scene reconstruction are necessary to establish the full circumstances surrounding Randy Mathenge’s death.
