EACC recovers KSh65.3 million in operation linked to Nairobi official Patrick Analo

Date:

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has intensified its crackdown on alleged corruption within Nairobi County after detectives raided the home of Patrick Analo, a senior official in the Urban Planning Department, on Thursday morning, June 4.

The operation, which forms part of an ongoing corruption investigation, led to the recovery of large amounts of cash believed to be worth millions of shillings.

According to reports, EACC officers conducted a search at Analo’s residence and discovered money packed inside two travel suitcases.

The exact amount recovered has not yet been made public, but investigators are treating the cash as key evidence in a probe that could expose deeper questions about the management of public resources within Nairobi County.

The seizure has once again placed City Hall under intense public scrutiny. For many Nairobi residents, the images and reports of cash allegedly hidden in suitcases have raised fresh concerns about accountability among senior county officials entrusted with managing public affairs.

While investigations are still ongoing and no court has determined the source of the money, the discovery has sparked renewed debate about corruption in county governments and the need for stronger oversight.

The latest development also puts pressure on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, whose administration now finds itself facing uncomfortable questions.

As of the time of publication, Sakaja had not issued a public statement regarding the raid involving one of the county’s senior officials. His silence is likely to attract attention as Kenyans await clarity on the matter and seek assurances that any wrongdoing will be addressed without interference.

The allegations emerge against the backdrop of a long and troubled history of corruption cases at Nairobi City Hall.

Over the past decade, several senior officials have faced investigations, arrests, prosecutions, and convictions linked to the alleged misuse of public funds. In 2018, former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and other officials were arrested over an alleged KSh213 million fraud scheme.

Additional charges followed in 2019 concerning irregular payments. However, after a lengthy legal battle, the Anti-Corruption Court acquitted Kidero in November 2025, finding that prosecutors had failed to prove he personally authorized or benefited from the disputed funds.

Other county officials have not been as successful in court. Former Chief Finance Officer Jimmy Kiamba and former County Secretary Lilian Ndegwa were sentenced to 12 years in prison after the High Court overturned an earlier acquittal in a procurement-related corruption case involving KSh18 million.

Meanwhile, former Finance CECM Charles Kerich also faced legal troubles, including suspension over planning-related concerns and a later jail term for contempt of court.

Beyond individual cases, City Hall has recently faced accusations surrounding the management of up to KSh21 billion in legal fees, with critics alleging that certain law firms received preferential treatment.

Governor Sakaja has consistently maintained that many of the disputed obligations were inherited from previous administrations and accumulated over nearly two decades.

The investigation involving Patrick Analo is still at an early stage, and EACC detectives are expected to continue reviewing documents, financial records, and other evidence recovered during the operation.

Nairobi residents will be watching closely to see whether the case marks another chapter in the county’s long struggle with corruption or becomes a turning point in efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability within City Hall.
