“Win an election first” Mbadi’s sharp message triggers response from Ida Odinga

Date:

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has strongly defended his leadership at the National Treasury following criticism from EALA MP Winnie Odinga, with the debate now drawing in Ida Odinga and exposing growing tensions within ODM after the death of veteran leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking during a development tour in Homa Bay, Mbadi made it clear that he would not accept advice from leaders he believes lack political and governance experience. He responded directly to remarks made by Winnie Odinga concerning the management of the economy and the running of the National Treasury.

Mbadi argued that leadership at such a high level requires years of political struggle, public service, and experience in handling government affairs.

The Treasury CS spoke about his own political journey, saying he joined Raila Odinga’s political movement in 1992 when he was only 20 years old. Over the years, he rose through the ranks and became one of ODM’s most trusted figures. He served as ODM chairman, Minority Leader in Parliament, and remained a close ally of Raila for decades.

Mbadi used this history to explain why he believes his opinions and decisions are shaped by real experience earned over many years in active politics.

According to Mbadi, leadership positions are not achieved through family names alone. He said public office should be guided by merit, hard work, and direct engagement with voters. He insisted that anyone who wants to lecture senior leaders should first prove themselves in elective politics and demonstrate the ability to win the trust of ordinary Kenyans.

The disagreement began after Winnie Odinga urged the Treasury to focus more on economic matters and avoid political distractions. Her comments appeared to question how the ministry was handling issues affecting Kenyans, including the economy and rising public concerns. Mbadi dismissed some of the criticism as immature and maintained that managing the country’s finances is a demanding responsibility that requires knowledge of budgeting, debt management, and cooperation with international financial partners.

Ida Odinga reacted emotionally to Mbadi’s remarks, especially comments that appeared to suggest that politics should move on after Raila Odinga’s death. She defended Raila’s contribution to the country and to ODM, saying his legacy should continue to be respected.

Her response reflected the emotions still surrounding the loss of the longtime opposition leader and the uncertainty about the future direction of the party
