Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka set firm boundaries before his mother’s funeral even began no politics, no speeches built around agendas, no one turning a day of mourning into a campaign moment.
He applied that standard to himself first and then extended it outward.
“On the day of my mother’s burial let us respect ourselves. I will also not speak politics, not even Wantam,” he said.
“The only person who will speak Wantam is Babu Owino and Edwin Sifuna and that is all.”
The Wantam process has consumed significant space in the opposition conversation for months. Meetings were announced, conditions were set, engagements were publicised and then complicated, and through all of it the process produced far more noise than movement.
Onyonka, positioned firmly within the Matiang’i political orbit, has watched every development from close enough range to form a firm opinion.
